A North West widow is on trial with three co-accused for allegedly masterminding the murder of her husband, with court testimony revealing she had been seeking his death months before the fatal attack.
During proceedings at the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday, August 13, accused Bafana Matotsoe testified that in June 2022, Rebecca Mfolo — widow of the late Aubrey Mfolo — asked him to find a witchdoctor to kill her husband, citing ongoing marital problems. Matotsoe, a former family taxi driver, said that by September 2022, she contacted him again, this time requesting help to hire a hitman.
Matotsoe claimed he introduced her to co-accused Lucky Kudumane, who allegedly agreed to carry out the killing for payment. Kudumane is said to have recruited others, including Sifiso Manana and a man identified only as Lucas, who remains at large.
According to testimony, Kudumane informed Matotsoe on January 10, 2023, that the group was ready to proceed. That night, the deceased’s daughter allegedly left the gate and house unlocked. The suspects reportedly tied up Aubrey Mfolo with masking tape, transported him to Letlhabile cemetery, and Lucas shot him three times.
In her own confession, Rebecca Mfolo claimed she arranged the killing because her husband was abusive, possessive, and unfaithful, alleging he had impregnated another woman. She described years of physical and emotional abuse, threats to burn her alive, and said she often slept separately from him with her children for safety.
Kudumane’s statement further alleged that a woman named Dineo and Matotsoe initially approached him with the plot, saying Mfolo had previously sought hitmen but failed to agree on a price. On the night of the murder, the attackers allegedly gained entry with the help of Mfolo’s 17-year-old granddaughter, who led them to his bedroom.
All four accused face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police are still searching for Lucas, who remains on the run.
