Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted he cannot confidently say the Blues will win their remaining two Champions League group-stage matches.
Chelsea’s hopes took another hit on Tuesday night after a 2–1 defeat to Atalanta in Italy — their second loss of the campaign — further jeopardising their chances of securing automatic qualification for the knockout rounds.
Maresca noted that his team must win both of their final group fixtures to have any realistic chance of finishing inside the top eight.
Chelsea’s next matches are against Pafos of Greece and reigning Serie A champions Napoli.
“Yes, probably with two wins — with 16 points — you can reach the top eight,” Maresca told reporters after the defeat.
“I’m not sure about that, but for now, the focus has to be on the first game. If we want to finish in the top eight, we need to win both.”
Chelsea will now shift attention to the Premier League, where they face David Moyes’ Everton this weekend as they look to return to winning form.
The Blues currently sit fifth in the table, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.
