A New York pastor surprised her congregation after announcing during a Sunday service that she is transitioning and will now use she/her pronouns.
Reverend Phil Phaneuf, 51, told members of the North Chili United Methodist Church that she has been undergoing gender transition. Wearing a rainbow stole, she shared, “I am transitioning. I affirm to all of you that I am transgender,” adding, “I’m not becoming a woman—I’m giving up pretending to be a man.”
She revealed that her new name will be Phillippa Faye Phaneuf, though she will continue to go by “Reverend Phil.”
The pastor added that she will not correct people harshly for mistakes, saying, “I’m not going to be the pronoun police. I don’t believe anyone here would misgender me out of malice.”
Phaneuf explained that the only major changes will be physical, noting she has been on hormone replacement therapy for about three months. She emphasized that her dedication to Jesus Christ and her ministry remains unchanged.
A video of the announcement is available below.
