Chelsea to Donate Part of £11.4m Club World Cup Bonuses to Diogo Jota’s Family in Heartfelt Gesture

Chelsea players will donate a portion of their £11.4 million Club World Cup bonuses to the family of Diogo Jota, who tragically died last month aged 28.

Enzo Maresca’s 24-man squad is set to receive a combined £11.4m for winning the tournament, with each player due £475,000 before tax and social security deductions. In a remarkable act of generosity, the Blues have agreed to contribute part of their earnings to support Jota’s widow after he was killed in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva and three children. The exact percentage to be donated remains undisclosed.

Liverpool, where Jota was a beloved Portuguese winger, will also honour his legacy. The club plans to unveil a sculpture outside Anfield and will hold a minute’s silence before their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday. Players will wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts throughout the 2025/26 season, and Jota’s No.20 shirt has been retired across all levels of the club.

FSG CEO Michael Edwards said:
"As a club, we shared the deep feelings of our supporters. It was important to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision, ensuring they were the first to know of our intentions.

This is the first time in Liverpool’s history such an honour has been given to an individual. Diogo joined us in 2020, won us number 20, and wore – with honour and affection – the number 20. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will forever be our number 20."
