Two Niger Delta University Students Killed in Bayelsa Road Crash

Two students of Niger Delta University, Amassoma, lost their lives on Wednesday in a head-on collision between a truck and a commercial tricycle along the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road in Bayelsa State. Several other passengers were critically injured.

Witnesses said the crash occurred at a sharp bend, blaming it on overspeeding and the absence of road signs. The truck, negotiating the bend at high speed, reportedly lost control and rammed into the tricycle, crushing it.

A trader, Godspower Okilo, told PUNCH Metro that the impact left the tricycle “damaged beyond recognition.” Good Samaritans pulled survivors from the wreckage and rushed them to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue.

Residents renewed calls for stricter traffic enforcement, urging the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and police to step up patrols, install speed breakers, and conduct regular checks on heavy-duty vehicles.

Mrs. Ebike Ekain, another resident, warned that more lives would be lost if urgent action is not taken, describing the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road as one of the most dangerous in Bayelsa due to its sharp turns and frequent accidents.

Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson DSP Musa Muhammad confirmed the crash, adding that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.
