Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the Premier League champions have reached an agreement with Parma to sign 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni for £26 million ($35m).
Leoni, who has made just 17 Serie A appearances, is set to become Liverpool’s latest summer signing following a £260m spending spree that has already brought in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.
Slot moved for defensive reinforcements after Jarell Quansah’s transfer to Bayer Leverkusen left him with only three senior centre-backs. Joe Gomez has missed most of pre-season through injury, while Ibrahima Konate has just one year left on his contract.
“The clubs have agreed a deal but he hasn’t signed yet. Once he does, I can say more,” Slot said ahead of Friday’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth.
Liverpool are also reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi for further depth.
The champions face a tough title defence, with Slot noting the loss of key players Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Caoimhin Kelleher, and the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car crash last month.
Wirtz’s £116m move from Leverkusen could become a British transfer record, but Slot believes the German international has the mentality to handle the pressure.
“He is creative, mentally strong, and won’t be distracted by a transfer fee. His adjustment has gone even better than expected,” the Dutch coach said.
