Nnamdi Kanu records first setback in bid to be moved from Sokoto prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a request by Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu seeking his transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Facility to either Kuje Prison in the Federal Capital Territory or Keffi Prison in Nasarawa State.

Kanu, through the Legal Aid Council, had filed an ex-parte application asking the court to grant the order without hearing from the Federal Government. He sought a directive compelling the government or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to immediately relocate him to a custodial centre within the court’s jurisdiction.

In the alternative, he requested to be moved to a facility close to the court—such as Suleja or Keffi—to enable him effectively pursue his constitutional right of appeal.

However, Justice James Omotosho on Monday refused the ex-parte motion, ruling that justice required hearing from all parties. He instructed Kanu to convert the application into a motion on notice and serve it on the relevant parties.

The case was adjourned to January 27, 2026, for hearing.

Last week, Justice Omotosho also declined to entertain submissions from Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel, who attempted to appear for him despite not being a lawyer.
